Conan Doyle on film
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on YouTube
Basil Rathbone is usually considered to be the quintessential
Sherlock Holmes on film. His sidekick, Watson, as played by Nigel
Bruce, is often denigrated for appearing far more stupid than the
author intended. That Watson was no shining intellectual light has
never been disputed, but was he stupid?
My attention was recently drawn to a short film of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself (youtube.com/watch?v=z0d9ufVyn_4), in which he briefly reveals his true opinion of Watson. Conan Doyle said, "I get letters addressed to his rather stupid friend, Watson".
