Site Redesign: Stage 1

It has been a few years since I last redesigned this web site, and I have been itching to change it for some time. Now I'm doing something about it, starting with the home page.

Don't expect to see a great deal of content change for a while; there are some areas I intend to fix up (or complete; some pages I started years ago are still only half-finished at best). This revamping of the site is mostly about the design, both from a purely visual perspective as well as a technical, coding standpoint.

Technical changes

While the old site used CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to affect the look of pages, they were used in a secondary role; the look of the page was achieved largely through HTML (HyperText Mark-up Language). The new design will use CSS as the primary design tool.

Another change will be the use of server-side includes (SSI) rather the CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripts. CGI scripts will generally be limited to small segments for generating dynamic content.

I intend all the HTML and CSS to conform to the recognized standards, and be able to display these images on all pages:

Valid HTML 4.01 Strict Valid CSS!

Content

For the moment, the only content change is on the home page. I have brought the Interactive Dishwasher to the forefront, partly to encourage me to write some of the things I've been thinking about for a long time, but never got around to putting fingers to keyboard, and partly because that page had no content of its own.
